How to connect wireless mouse to laptop?

I just got a wireless Microsoft Explorer Mouse (not mini-explorer) and I can't seem to connect it. Honestly, I don't think the instructions are that great; they're kinda vague. But basically, this is what I have done: install the software on the CD, put the battery in the mouse, charge it for a while, then plug the receiver into the computer. That is exactly what the manual says really, and somehow the mouse is supposed to connect to the computer. There does not appear to be any button on the receiver and I've restarted the computer and taken out the battery and put it back in. Somehow the instructions on the manual didn't make much sense to me, as it does not appear to make sense as to how the receiver just automatically connects to the mouse, but maybe I'm wrong. But the mouse will not connect! D: what am I doing wrong? I only have one computer to test on and the powers on and everything.
