Was the hunchback of notre damn a true story?

While it may not be a true story, writers do sometimes take real events and shape the story around them. I was surprised to find out the woman in the book "Vanity Fair" was real but not much like the character. The real person was a con artist who may have believed her own lies. Notre Dame is the correct spelling. lol
