The Hunchback of Notre Dame, gargoyles?

They're not alive, they're in the characters' imagination. Remember how Frollo thought the statues were watching him when he wanted to throw Quasi in the well, and how the one statue's eyes started glowing as it broke off. The statues just reflect the characters' thoughts and feelings. Quasi imagines them as friends, Frollo imagines them as fiends. I love that movie too.
