In the movie Jean de Florette, according to Jean, why did God make him a hunchback?

"Now I know why God gave me this hump." that's a quote from the movie after Jean has to get water during the windstorm, and everything is going wrong. Does he think that because he is a hunchback, it is logical that he should suffer?
